HomeWhat’s OnFood & DrinkSheffield Yorkshire’s 10 best restaurants crowned in new list – and it might surprise you

It’s not the usual list of expensive, Michelin-starred fine diners in North Yorkshire

Restaurant online booking service OpenTable has released a list of the best restaurants in Yorkshire.

And if you’re expecting yet another list of very expensive, Michelin-starred restaurants in North Yorkshire, think again. There isn’t a single one of those on this list which might be a refreshing surprise for those who don’t want to shell out massively on small portions of very fancy food.*

Collated from user reviews, the OpenTable Top 10 Diners’ Choice Winners in Yorkshire list features from the top: Bench, Sheffield; Starling Independent Bar Kitchen Cafe, Harrogate; The Westwood, Beverley; La Rustica, Doncaster; The Lounge, Bingley; Amici, Leeds; ICO, Wakefield; La Fiesta, Doncaster; Chef Jono at V&V; Leeds; and Mad Frans, Leeds.

Here’s a little bit about each one.

*There’s nothing wrong with said places. If you want the finest in cutting-edge cooking such restaurants exist but they’re not for everyone and shouldn’t necessarily be seen as the pinnacle of dining.

1. Bench

This Sheffield bistro serves modern, French, Italian and Spanish-influenced small plates and cocktails although bigger dishes are available. It’s keenly priced too.

7B Nether Edge Road, S7 1RU

2. Starling Independent Bar Kitchen Cafe

Don’t be perturbed by the long, unwieldy name. This Harrogate bar, cafe and bistro is loved for its handmade pizzas, imaginative light bites and brunch menu.

47 Oxford Street, HG1 1PW

3. The Westwood

This Beverley restaurant prides itself on serving, immaculately presented food comprising fine produce from local suppliers. A la carte, it’s moderately expensive although there is a three-course lunch menu for £30.

New Walk, HU17 7AE

4. La Rustica

Proper Italian food in an informal, shabby chic setting is what makes this Doncaster trattoria so popular.

5 Nether Hall Rd, DN1 2PH

5. The Lounge

This Bingley venue serves modern British food with strong international fusion influences.

2 Queen Street, BD16 2JS

6. Amici

This chic, suburban Leeds ristorante serves well-presented modern takes on Italian classics. If you’re bored of uninspiring pasta and pizzas this is worth a shot.

Sandhill Parade, 592-596 Harrogate Rd, LS17 8DP

7. ICO

Perhaps the shape of things to come in regenerating Wakefield is this authentic Mexican cantina. Forgot Tex-Mex rubbish like fajitas and chili con carne and try the colourful, spicy real Mexico here.

1-3 Wood Street, WF1 2EL

8. La Fiesta

If you’re on a comedown from your holiday in Spain try this tapas restaurant in Doncaster which serves all the tapas and mains you enjoyed on the Iberian peninsula. There’s all-you-can-eat tapas too. ¡Vaya!

45 Doncaster Rd, Armthorpe, DN3 2BU

9. Chef Jono at V&V

MasterChef finalist Jono Hawthorne serves imaginative fine dining at this Leeds restaurant which beat all Yorkshire’s Michelin-starred restaurants to be crowned Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year at the Food Awards England 2022.

68 New Briggate, LS1 6NU

10. Mad Frans

This quirky bar serves classic British and American comfort food with elegant style as well as cocktails… lots of cocktails.

Building 6 Wellington Place, Whitehall Rd, LS1 4EQ
