Doncaster Sheffield Airport closure petition gets 78,000 signatures with demonstrations planned

Conservative MP Nick Fletcher is not happy with the airport’s owner

A petition to save Doncaster Sheffield Airport has so far gathered an impressive 78,000 signatures and is now among the most prominent petitions on Change.org.

The petition, started by Yorkshire Plane Spotting, has received support from Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher, who has also since received support from Brendan Clarke-Smith, MP for Bassetlaw, Alexander Stafford, the Conservative MP for Rother Valley and Sarah Champion, the Labour Member of Parliament for Rotherham. The petition was launched just hours after Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) announced they were likely to close.

The announcement sent shockwaves through communities of South Yorkshire, and rekindled fears of a jobs bloodbath. Many residents also questioned how levelling up would work in Doncaster and Sheffield if the area lost what is among the most connected airports in Britain.

One resident wrote: “As part of levelling up we need this airport and yet Wizz Air pull out to concentrate on the south. There’s a surprise.

“It’s a brilliant airport and can’t believe other airlines haven’t gone there. I can’t be at the rally but wish I could be.”

The Petition organisers have since said a demonstration against the closure has been planned for August 13. They said: “We’re holding a rally at Doncaster Marketplace on Saturday 13th August at 1pm.”

On the other hand conservative MP Nick Fletcher has revealed his frustrations at failing to meet airport bosses to discuss a way forward that could see the airport saved. Mr Fletcher, who has been doing daily updates to his constituents describing the matter as an “airport crisis” said: “Yesterday I finally heard from John Whittaker. He’s the Chairman of Peel Group. I wrote to him and Oliver Coppard last week.

“I am afraid the letter from John Whittaker was not positive. He has agreed that the consultation period may be extended if needed but he went on to say that the airport is not financially viable and therefore should not continue in its current form.

“This is most disappointing, especially when Doncaster Sheffield Airport has so many advantages over other airports which are profitable and viable.

“I will be writing back to Mr Whittaker to press the point over 77,000 of you have made, that ‘we want to save our airport.’ I have a lot of questions for him.”

Mr Fletcher said he had been trying to get Mayor Oliver Coppard to meet with John Whittaker but had not been successful. Mr Fletcher wrote that he had several questions for Mr Whittaker.

He said: “These are some of them. I will ask again for him to meet with me.”

“I will ask why Ben Houchen can make Teesside profitable? I will ask if he will sell to an external investor?

“I will ask if this was always Peels end goal? I will ask again does he want a legacy of closing airports?

“I will ask does he have a personal message for all the people who may lose their jobs? I will ask does he have a personal message for all my constituents?

“I will ask does he have a personal message for the 77,000 who have signed our petition? I will let you know when I get a reply.”

And Mr Fletcher urged his followers to continue making themselves heard. He said: “You the people have a voice. Use it.

“The online petition is great. Social media whether we like it or not is the town square.

“Use it. Like and share each other’s posts.

“It is important. But keep it respectful at all times.

“No bad language, no nastiness. If you don’t agree say so but say it as you would if you were stood in front of someone.

“I represent everyone but much prefer to represent someone who is courteous and kind.”

Mr Fletcher also sent a rallying call to the owners of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, urging them to cal of the closure. He said: “My message to Peel and John Whittaker is a simple one. Work with us and we will work with you.

“Do the right thing for the right reasons. You know closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport will drive a dagger into the heart of our community.

“Reconsider. Be the bigger person and call off the closure.”

Nick Fletcher’s fight to save Doncaster Sheffield airport is now on its 16th day.

  1. An intriguing discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you need to write more on this subject, it may not be a taboo matter but generally people do not discuss these issues. To the next! All the best!!
